Heraldry originally meant
“representative of the army” and
is derived from the German word
“Harriwalt”. Particular
reference was made to the
shields used by the Germans as
far back as the Roman Empire.
The first heraldic devices were
simple shields by which one
tribe could be distinguished
from another. The carrying of a
coat of arms became widespread
in the twelfth century and
knights and kings decorated
their suits of armour with
patterns and symbols. The theory
is that bearing a coat of arms
enabled knights to be more
easily recognised during battle,
because their identity was often
concealed when wearing a visor
and armour.
